The Fear of Change

Most people find it difficult to consciously change or to deal with externally induced change because of the structure of our brain.

The brain has evolved over billions of years and new components developed iteratively. The brain consists of three main tiers. The reptilian brain, for survival instincts and behaviors, the limbic system, the center of your emotions and feelings, and the last to be added component is the neocortex, for rational thinking.

The limbic system arose much earlier and has a much greater influence on our behavior than most people are aware of. Because of our intelligence, we often think that we just have to decide something and then we can implement it immediately. But think of these goals: 

If only our intellect was responsible for it, then we would simply achieve whatever we set out to do. In contrast, the limbic system determines our actions much more decisively than most people believe. It wants to give us the security of survival. Therefore it learns strategies that work and applies these again and again. This leads to the fact that the limbic system leads us to continue to behave as we have behaved so far.
